Governors

WELCOME TO THE GOVERNORS’ SECTION

The Governing Body is a group of people that are responsible and accountable for all major decisions about the school and its future. Governors have a legal responsibility to conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. They work closely with the headteacher and staff at Leyland Methodist Infant school to set the school’s vision and strategic aims, monitor and evaluate performance acting as a critical friend to the headteacher and ensuring that the school is accountable to those it serves.

From September 2018, Leyland Methodist Infant School Governors opted to formally collaborate with Leyland Methodist Junior School. The aim of the collaboration was for the two schools to work in closer partnership. To this end, from September 2018, some committees have been merged to cover the interests of both schools. In addition, there is also a Joint Committee comprising members of both Governing Bodies appointed to oversee the progress of the collaboration.

From September 2018, the following committees are in place:

Joint Committee (LMIS and LMJS Governors);

Premises, Health & Safety (LMIS and LMJS Governors);

Ethos & Curriculum (LMIS and LMJS Governors);

Staffing & Finance (LMIS Governors);

Standards and Effectiveness (LMIS Governors);

Pay Committee (LMIS Governors);

Appraisal Committee (LMIS and LMJS Governors).

There are other committees in place that meet as and when required e.g. Complaints Review Committee, Pupil Discipline Committee etc.

The purpose of the governing body is to help the school provide the best possible education for its pupils.

In this respect, the governing body has three key roles

TO PROVIDE A STRATEGIC VIEW
To help decide the school’s strategy for improvement so that pupils learn most effectively and achieve the highest possible standards.

To help set and keep under review, the broad framework within which the school is run.

The governing body should focus all its work on the key issues of:
  • Raising standards of achievement
  • Establishing high expectations
  • Promoting effective teaching and learning

TO ACT AS A CRITICAL FRIEND
The governing body also provides the headteacher and staff with support, advice and information, drawing on its members’ knowledge and experience. In these ways the governing body acts as a critical friend to the school
Critical  in the sense of its responsibility for reviewing the school’s effectiveness, asking challenging questions and pressing for improvement.
Friend  because it exists to promote the interests of the school and its pupils.

TO ENSURE ACCOUNTABILITY
The governing body is responsible for ensuring good quality education.
The headteacher and staff report to the governing body on the school’s performance.
The governing body has a right to discuss, question and refine proposals while respecting the professional roles of the headteacher and other staff and their responsibilities for managing the school. The governing body is also accountable for the school to the wider community.
